What is a solar hot water system? With a solar hot water system, solar energy heats water which is held in or passed through solar hot water collectors.  The solar-heated water is stored in well insulated storage tanks to provide an available source of heated water.

What happens if there isn’t enough sun? Solar hot water systems incorporate boost heating with either gas or electricity, which provides supplementary heating during times of insufficient solar radiation.  One of the most efficient forms of boost heating is a gas post-heating system; this system adds heat only to the water being drawn from the storage tank, and only as required.

How much will it save me in energy costs? With a correctly designed and installed solar hot water system, solar energy will provide from 60% to 80% of hot water requirement in the average home, depending upon the levels of solar radiation in your environment.
