The Camberwell Electrics Story
Camberwell Electrics was first established in 1952 serving the community with old-fashioned service, together with quality products and competitive prices.
One of the co-owners of Camberwell Electrics, Graeme 'Hawkey' Hawksford, said "I started working in Hartwell in 1973 - then it had four banks, four butchers and three greengrocers as well as a Dickins Supermarket".
Camberwell Electrics was originally started in 1952 by Gus Janson who had been a pilot in the war, and returned first selling vacuum cleaners and then moving on to start the family electrical store.
Over 61 years later we have stood the test of time to prove that people still today trust us to give them the same high standards of customer service and quality products as we did in 1952.
Even though we had a large fire in 2003 which extensively damaged the premises in 2003, we were able to rebuild the store to include larger showrooms, new areas and a larger variety of products.
Today, Camberwell Electrics has developed a great reputation to become leaders in Air Conditioning, Kitchen, Laundry, Home Automation, Audio Visual and Solar Appliances.
Our focus is to offer our customers convenience of one location with a huge variety of products for all their appliance needs.
Graeme says `We have had our share of action, including our famous fire. At one stage we had a ram raid on Sunday night, repaired the damage, only to have another one the next Thursday.
On another occasion the front door was sledgehammered - but the thief conveniently dropped his driver's licence - he got done!'
Graeme puts the success of the business down to the staff and their commintment to looking after their customers and the company's relationship with the local community.
